Success Stories from Community Health Mission

We love sharing success stories from our partners! Here are just a few of the inspiring people who've been helped by the good folks at the Community Health Mission.

Jocelyn Robinson
Jocelyn Robinson is a 39-year-old uninsured single parent who was referred to Community Health Mission (CHM) by her caseworker. She was diagnosed as a borderline diabetic by the doctors at Community Health Mission and was given two options - lose weight or become medically dependent for the rest of her life. She chose option 1 - to lose weight. With the help of CHM's nurse practitioner Crystal Height and Ana Viseras, she was enrolled in diabetes education classes, which she attended once a week for nine months. She also started working out at the Wellness Center.

Jocelyn has lost 58 pounds to date - just 27 pounds short of her goal weight! Not only has she taken charge of her health, she has changed the dietary habits of her child and has passed on her new-found health information to other members of her family.

Joan Kelly

She'd been diagnosed with hypertension, was taking 12 medications and had undergone triple by-pass surgery. She was skipping dosages of her medications because she couldn't afford them, and was receiving sporadic care at numerous facilities with no single person overseeing her care regimen and prescriptions.

Joan came to CHM two years ago. She discovered that the Community Health Mission could become her "medical home" FREE OF CHARGE. Joan began to receive care from her personal Internal Medicine and Gynecological physicians. She received a mammogram, Pap smear, and lab work - at no cost to Joan. She received a three-month supply of medication and one year of diabetic supplies, which are refilled at no cost to her, from our partner MedBank Foundation. She enrolled in a wellness program and began exercising at the YMCA, again for free, as part of the YMCA's partnership with CHM.

Today, Joan has quit smoking, lost weight, decreased medications by more than half, has control over her diabetes and enjoys a much better quality of life.
